“In a study by the Center for Creative Leadership of top American and European executives whose careers derailed, the inability to build and lead a team was one of the most common reasons for failure. Team skills, which had been of little consequence in a similar study in the early 1980s, had emerged as a key mark of leadership ten years later. By the 1990s, teamwork became the most frequently valued managerial competence in studies of organizations around the world.” — Daniel Goleman, Working with Emotional Intelligence

A scout leader was trying to lift a fallen tree from the path. His pack gathered around to watch him struggle. “Are you using all your strength?” one of the scouts asked.

“Yes!” was the exhausted and exasperated response.

“No. You are not using all your strength,” the scout replied. “You haven’t asked us to help you.”

Good managers have always fostered teamwork. But highly effective leaders are now showing the performance power of building a team-based organization. When effectively organized and led, teams:

• Multiply an organization’s flexibility and response times

• Flatten vertical hierarchies and smash functional chimneys

• Provide a vehicle for wide scale participation in organization change and improvement efforts

• Turn involvement and empowerment rhetoric into reality

• Expand jobs and elevate the sense of purpose and meaning they provide

• Foster a spirit of community, cooperation, and belonging

• Build the commitment of those people who will ultimately make — or break — any organization change or improvement effort

• Harness the improvement energy and ideas of everyone throughout the organization

• Become the key unit of organizational learning through sharing collective experiences and multiplying intellectual power

• Replace command and control discipline with far more powerful and lasting self and peer discipline

• Improve communications and deepen understanding of change and improvement decisions being made

• Produce better problem solving and more thorough decision making

Where teams have been effectively organized and led, the list of team outcomes have led to dramatic improvements in productivity, customer service, quality, process management, innovation, cost effectiveness, job satisfaction, morale, and financial performance.

Leading Teams: We Have Got to Take it Personally

“If you would create something you must be something.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 18th century German poet

Most managers grew up in a command and control era. In those days, a “strong leader” was a decisive problem solver who was a tough disciplinarian. He (most were men) “took control” and “made things happen.” Teamwork was when everyone rallied and pulled together to meet the leader’s goals and follow his direction.

It’s tough to change those deeply ingrained values and approaches. In our workshops and consulting, some days it feels like we see a never-ending stream of “old school” managers (some of the worst can be newer and younger managers) who are struggling to transform themselves into effective team developers and leaders.

It can be done. It is being done. Our team’s effectiveness depends largely upon our effectiveness as a leader. Our team leadership effectiveness hinges on:

• My level of self-confidence. Sharing power and developing others to do what I used to do is almost impossible if I am insecure. If I draw much of my self worth from how well others “listen up and follow my orders,” I am going to have a tough time empowering and developing a strong team.

• A new view of my job. A strong team leader knows that his or her job is not to be the main problem solver. That just ensures more upward delegation and an ever-weakening team. Rather, strong team leaders make sure teams — well equipped and supported to solve them — are solving the right problems.

• Servant-leadership. Our job is to direct and guide our teams. But we’re also there to serve them. They are our “customers” (although “partners” is generally more appropriate). So what’s my performance gap? How do I know? What’s my personal improvement plan for closing my biggest gaps?

• Strong team leadership skills. A Fortune poll found that “a team player and team leader” was the most important skill CEOs felt an MBA should have. This is also the single biggest factor in our confidence levels with teams. There’s a strong relationship between our skills at facilitating a team discussion, handling conflict, encouraging and capitalizing on diversity, keeping a meeting on track, building a team’s effectiveness, etc., and our enthusiasm for teams.

• A strong, effective management team. As a manager, we need to ensure that our team is a good example of team effectiveness. That provides a model and authentic team leadership for everyone else.

The art of how leaders make decisions has been the subject of academic studies for years. The myriad of leadership studies all have the following in common: Much of what affects the decisions we make, occurs at a very deep sub-conscious level. This explains why the Harvard Business Review (February 2007) rated “self-awareness” the most important capability for leaders to develop. Consider the following research: • A study of more than 300 top-level executives from fifteen global companies showed that six competencies distinguished star players from the average: Influence, Team Leadership, Organizational Awareness, Self-Confidence, Achievement Drive, and Leadership (Spencer, L. M., Jr., 1997). • One study by Lyle Spencer for a $ 2 billion industrial controls division of Siemens found that leaders who were at the top 10-15 percent in revenue growth consistently had skills in collaboration and teamwork and an ability to lead teams and take initiative. These skills differed from the managers who were not in the top tier of performance. • In his book “Working with Emotional Intelligence”, Daniel Goleman found that 67% of the abilities needed for effective performance were “emotional intelligence” competencies (such as self-awareness and empathy) and that IQ accounts for only about 25% of job success. • Numerous studies have demonstrated the return on investment a company receives when they adopt a leadership style characterized by giving honest and constructive feedback through “coaching”.

What does a “self-aware” leader look like? • A leader who is aware of their strengths knows how to leverage them for the benefit of the company. • A leader who is aware of how they are perceived knows how to meet goals by building collaborative relationships with others. • A leader who understands their emotional triggers will not be in “auto pilot” when responding to emotional situations. • A leader with clarification of their values has an ability to find purpose in their work. • “Self-aware” people reframe their life story and find purpose in adversity. • Research shows that a leader who is “self-aware” is more likely to outperform those who don’t on all economic indicators.

Any leader’s self-awareness can be increased in a number of ways. Their supervisor can be trained to “coach” the leader and give constructive feedback to raise the leader’s level of self-awareness. An organization may choose to employ a leadership coach from outside. These coaches provide the benefit of being objective while addressing habits that may impede a leader’s ability to be effective. Another way to improve a leader’s self-awareness is to have them do free online “tests”. These free assessments can be a great “conversation starter”, as they can be found on almost every topic including assessments for leadership styles, EQ and communication skills. An organization can also pay for valid and reliable online tests that are scored and interpreted by a certified individual. Additionally, 360 degree evaluations that entail evaluations of the leader by subordinates, colleagues and supervisors can be valuable. By employing some of these strategies, an organization will benefit by having a ” self-aware ” leader who is able to cultivate and leverage personal relationships while creating commitment to a strategic vision and direction!

Leadership Skills – Can You Really Learn Skills or Naturally Born With It

Leadership is very important especially when one is running a team and/or a business. Many people say that the business world is what makes the world go round. But the business world will be running if they do not have leaders like Donald Trump to lead them. But a leader keeps the company running and without them, the company will have no direction. That is why getting into a leadership training seminar is very beneficial.

The problem though is that there are plenty of leadership training program available in the world and choosing one can be a daunting task.In this article, you will get some tips on how to choose the right leadership training seminar for you.For you to ease that confusion here are some tips for you to ponder upon.A good leader knows and admits his weaknesses and finds ways to deal with them.Every leader has their weakness and a good one accepts and turns them into strengths. So knowing what to improve can help you find the right course especially when there is so much variety like improving on one’s confidence to better skills in communicating.

The next consideration is to know more about the training program.Find out if present successful people took their course and even alumni because this can be very encouraging for you.You also need to know who are the speakers and instructors. Are there motivational speakers? Are the teachers qualified? You need to do some research on that.Sometimes the organizers can provide you with such information.

Who will be teaching you? Are there motivational speakers in their program? This means that you need to research on their credentials which can be found on the internet or from the organizers themselves. If it is out of town, then you need to spare some budget for travel, food and lodging unless the company will sponsor such expenses. But it can be tough if they are out of town since you have to travel and that can be tiring.

So try to find some courses that near where you live or work.So it is better if you can find a leadership training course near your workplace or home for convenience sake.

This is particularly important for those people who have a tight schedule and it can be quite hard for them to insert such an activity into their work schedule.

But some companies provide off days for such activities since they can also get some benefit from it.

Article by Hazel Lowndes

John Kenneth Galbraith, Canadian-American economist, suggests that; “A banker need not be popular. Indeed, a good banker in a healthy capitalist society should probably be much disliked.”

The necessity for bankers to be set apart and distanced from the social / emotional concerns of day to day life may well have been an acceptable business norm in the past when bankers perceived themselves as bastions of good judgement. Now economic tides have shown them to be as susceptible to emotional charge that fuels the serial gambler’s desire to win; as susceptible to the tendency to subordinate what is right in order to fulfil ones own desires as the rest of human kind. Unaware of the emotions that drive behaviour in the pursuit of shareholder value – growth at any price and personal wealth – banking is perceived as solely self-interested and often at times exploitative of its customers.

Popularity And Trust Is A Source Of Competitive Advantage

Lack of popularity today is not a symbol of professional distance that comes of having to make tricky and sometimes unpopular decisions in the best interests of the public; rather it is a sign of complete loss of faith in the moral judgment of financial professionals. Put simply, the public don’t trust bankers’ motives. As if to further cement this perception in the public mind Alexander Dielius, CEO Eastern Europe Goldman Sachs, January 2010, in the Wall Street Journal, said; “Banks do not have an obligation to promote the public good”. This was said only 14 months after the disastrous events of September 2008, exhibiting a level of arrogance and lack of self-awareness that staggers even the most nave of investors. John Kenneth Galbraith went on to say; “The study of money, above all other fields in economics, is one in which complexity is used to disguise truth or to evade truth, not to reveal it”.

Popularity for banks is now vital if they are to regain public trust and subsequently attract investment and growth. The time for worship of wealth is over as customers flock to what they perceive as more ethical sources, craving honesty, transparency, and simplicity from their professional advisors. The public mood of dissatisfaction waits eagerly upon the emergence of an ethical banking source where a reasonable return is made for financial service. The bank that successfully and authentically transforms its culture to a culture of integrity will be in huge demand.

What Makes Good People Do Bad Things?

This is not unique to bankers. Put any human being in a position where temptation is put so plainly in front of them, and in the absence of ethical rules that keep the individual safe from inducement, most of us would fall victim to the vices of self interest and greed. Banks are in fact full of good people, who have been placed in a position of economic authority for so long, where, in the absence of a focus on virtuous business practice, good people have made bad and unprincipled decisions. It is clear that all types of organisations are vulnerable to creating context where social pressures, arrogance and the lack of moral awareness can influence good people to make bad and even unethical decisions. The psychological transformation from a good person into someone who takes part in wrongdoing is explained by psychology professor Philip Zimbardo, who conducted the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment, in the following way; “When people do not pay attention to ethical considerations of their daily decision making on an on-going basis, it can impact the long term success or failure of an organisation and the personal lives of many.”

Character Ethics And Organisational Development

Organisations are a collection of individual human animals co-operating to create wealth to safe guard their existence. Sets of social rules are necessary to allow humans to co-operate in this way, and these rules may be spoken and recorded in codes of conduct, values statements, and policies.Often other rules are at play, unspoken behavioural norms that everyone conforms to in order to belong. These unspoken behaviours are often perceived to promote the most effective strategies for survival of the organisation and the individual. Unspoken rules sometimes diverge from the publicly stated procedures in powerful ways. This divergence from the ‘socially acceptable policy statement’ on ethical conduct and the ‘colluded, subconscious behavioural norm’ is witnessed by customers and seen as incongruence – more commonly known as lying. The mismatch between what organisations say they do and what they do is at the heart of customers and investors willingness to trust. This is the ethical dilemma facing many professional service organisations today and the key to business transformation and success. Don’t say you’ll do the right thing; just DO the right thing – consistently, reliably, and forever.

Dr Stephen Covey writes masterfully about the role of doing the right thing or what he calls ‘character ethics’ in organisations. As a result of a study he undertook where he read the last 200 years of writing on organisational and personal success he noticed a significant pattern. The most recent 50 years of literature concentrated on what Covey describes as the “Personality Ethic” technique driven methodologies for ‘quick fixing’ the customer to give you more of what you want.

The shallow concentration on social image, media skills, interpersonal influencing strategies, marketing, and customer service skills etc. These “superficial…. social band-aids and aspirin that addressed acute problems and even appear to solve them temporarily, but left the underlying chronic problems untouched to fester and resurface time and again.” In stark contrast the literature of the first 150 years focused almost exclusively on what Covey calls the “Character Ethic.” These include traits and attributes such as; humility, compassion, fidelity, temperance, courage, diligence, simplicity, honesty, integrity etc. He suggested that individuals and organisations “can only experience true success and enduring happiness as they learn to integrate these principles into the organisations (and, therefore, individuals) basic character.”

After World War 1 the shift from Character Ethics to Personality Ethics was quite pronounced as technology and media communications brought the leaders out into the public domain. The power of the media and technology as the major influencing vehicles of our age has meant many leaders have lost sight of the character that drives the collective behaviour of a business. For years organisations have invested in pubic behaviour, image improvement, and technique driven relationship management. We see this today with many banks formulating ‘Customer Charters’, ‘Service Pledges’ and investing heavily in personal branding workshops, and customer service skills training. This is all positive and extremely necessary; however, it is a distraction which has caused leaders to take their eye off the motives that underpin their practice. No amount of fancy rhetoric can compensate for a lack of trustworthiness. Many customers would prefer far less spin with their messages and much more clear-cut honesty, compassion and knowledge that service providers are genuinely acting in their best interest. Lack of investment in character ethics has lead to moral creep, which combined with shareholder pressure and bonus cultures has lead to the many organisational failures of recent times. To mention a few; Enron, Swiss Bank UBS Kweku Adodoli fraud, Bernard Madoff, the political expenses scandal, the sub prime selling scandal, News of The World telephone hacking scandal, protection insurance miss-selling scandal……. etc

The cultural development of Character Ethics in organisations is the conscious and subconscious solution to develop trust, increase popularity, and as a result deliver growth. It won’t ‘fix’ the customer but it might ‘fix’ the bank! The slow and demanding process of exploring the character of your organisation, and every individual within it – especially the leadership team, makes sound commercial sense. Some progressive service sector organisations have already realised the economic advantages of ethical practice and are moving rapidly into the field.

The Agenda For Personal Excellence

“Leadership is about character, no… leadership is character” says Alexandre Havard in his remarkable book ‘Virtuous Leadership.’ Character ethics create a space in which leadership occurs by instilling trust. We acquire character ethics through our own efforts, “the very act of acquiring them is an act of leadership” says Warren Bennis.

We have produced a model for the development of Character Ethics in leadership which we have called ‘The Agenda for Personal Excellence’ TM. It is devoid of faith based moralising or religiosity and is a practical and secular approach to character development. In developing the model we see no conflict between the need to be successful economically and the pursuit of moral integrity. It is necessary for moral leadership to produce wealth and success otherwise the practice of character ethics would not be sustainable.

The Agenda For Personal Excellence – The Model

Self Awareness – At the heart of this model is self awareness. A leader is able to focus attention on their own behaviour and evaluates it logically. Working from the inside out and consistently lives up to their own personal standards.

Self Determination – Acts without external compulsion based in his/her character. Freely chooses his/her own course of action and acts autonomously without direction.

Professional Moral Courage – Follows a self-imposed code of conduct and consistently delivers on his/her promises. Role models positive leadership behaviour.

Being Open Minded – Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and often uses active imagination to resolve difficulties and remove obstacles. Is willing to suspend their own judgement to consider the views of others.

Authentic – Behaves in a way that is consistent with his/her own personality. Is honest and truthful. Leads from the authority that stems from their personal beliefs.

Self Confidence & Belief – Speaks openly, but not arrogantly, about his/her successes and achievements and appears to be happy with their achievements in life. Shows no need to prosper at other people’s expense.

Sharing Knowledge – Shares knowledge, skill and expertise frequently in a confident and comfortable way. Creates a family/team/organisational culture or atmosphere that encourages everyone to share knowledge.

Humility – Shows respect for others regardless of status. Is modest about their achievements.

Charisma – Presence – Possesses a compelling attractiveness or charm which commands attention in a non-threatening way. Demonstrates no unrealistic sense of superiority.

Compassion – Consistently shows empathy for others and actively demonstrates sympathy for the suffering of others. He/she regards kindness as a strength and cruelty as a weakness.

Respect – Value the Individual – Expresses an attitude of positive regard for others and accepts others as different without diminishing them.

You know the old expression – “They’re a born leader!”? Is there any such thing – or can we all be leaders? Is there any secret that can be learned – that we can all learn? Or are some “leaders” and most of us “followers”?

Well, first of all, let’s get a few facts straight. Most people who find themselves in leadership positions, wouldn’t be able to lead themselves out of a paper bag! They might have built up a veneer of self-confidence to get them to where they are – but that’s all self-confidence is, a veneer.

Self-confidence is a cloak that builds and protects your personality, or your ego. Your personality is not who you really are, it’s who you think you are – warts and all – based on the self-perceptions that you learned during your formative years. Self-confidence merely bolsters the ego and, in fact, removes you even further from your true capabilities and inner potential.

There’s a world of difference between the self-confident personality and someone with presence or charisma. People with presence are true leaders – whether they even have thought about it in those terms or not. So, what’s the difference between the “normal” person and the person who exudes presence?

Very simple really – and we can all exude presence. You see decades of research prove that “normal” people use only a small percentage of their mental capability to focus on the present moment – the here and now. Generally speaking, your subconscious mind is looking at the old programs that create your self-perception, which were installed during your childhood. In other words, your subconscious mind is living in the past. All the while, your conscious mind is being distracted by random thoughts – approximately, fifty thousand of them every day. No wonder your mind wanders! Generally speaking, these random thoughts are worries or distractions about the outturn of events, or looking forward (to the weekend, the holidays, meeting up with your friends tonight). In other words, your conscious mind is living in the future. What all this amounts to is that only about 1% or 2% of you is actually present, in the present.

People with presence are simply a little (or, in some cases, a lot) more present than all the “normal” people who are not all here at all. They are more focused in the present moment and are, therefore, more present. Surely, that’s what the word “presence” actually means! Being more present, “normal” people notice them as being different – people with presence stand out from the crowd. And, as a result, they make more of an impression – they are more impressive.

Some “leaders” do it naturally. Others have learned it. We can all learn it. In fact, it comes naturally to every one of us too – we’ve just forgotten how to do it. You see, having presence is simply a question of being more focused in the present moment – more than the pathetic 1-2% that is the “norm”. And we all were experts at paying attention to the present moment when we were young children. (If you have children, just look at the way they get engrossed in their play, watching television, etc.)

Re-train your mind to be present – by paying attention to your five senses. Come to your senses. Appreciate the present moment by seeing, feeling, hearing smelling and tasting what’s going on. If you go through these simple steps, your mind will get used to being more here – and it will wander less. If you’re with friends, really listen to what they’re saying, rather than thinking about what you’ll say next. If you’re playing sports, really feel the strain in your legs and arms, rather than thinking about something that happened beforehand or thinking that your opponent is better than you (that’s actually a self-fulfilling prophecy!). If you’re in a meeting with someone you don’t like, stop thinking that useless thought, listen to what they’re really saying (not what you think they’re saying) and get involved – really involved. If you’re playing with your children, don’t try to wash the dishes and do the laundry at the same time – really play with them, rather than going through the motions.

But, most of all, give yourself the space and time to re-train your mind to pay attention – simply to notice and observe the present moment, using your five senses. You could go for a walk – just to do that. Not to “clear your head” or “think things through” – just to appreciate the here and now. You could allocate time to sit in the park – just experiencing the here and now. If you workout, you could turn off your iPod and really focus on the muscles you’re using.

The key point is this. If you want to get mentally fit and have presence, a little time set aside for mental training goes a very long way. And we can all do it.

Empowering leadership in children involves planned events and teachable moments that give children the opportunity to experience what leadership is like.

Leadership is not just about being in the lead of others, but also about being in lead of oneself. This can be a hard concept for adults to grasp, but children, when given a chance, naturally get it. They realize quickly, that self-control is a leadership skill. Not only that, the better a person is at self-regulation the better leader of themselves and others they will be. A controlling leader of others is often out of control with self and children see this very easily.

Therefore, there are some things that you can do to empower leadership in children by using ten encouragement techniques.

1. Encourage Positivity — One of the hardest things for some people is to be positive in the face of difficulty or setbacks. However, by demonstrating the ability to be positive no matter what, to feel joy no matter what, you encourage positivity in children. When a child is talking about life events in a negative way, simply ask them a leading question that will lead them toward positive thoughts about their situation.2. Encourage Introspection — In almost every situation, when people look to themselves, rather than others, for their “why” for doing anything they can become a better person, more empathetic, and more loving. If a child can be taught the idea that think, what if that were me in this situation, or what if that were someone I care about, they can develop leadership skills that will truly wow you.3. Encourage Connections — All humans need to be connected to others. Yet, while we are more connected electronically than ever before, technology makes true human connection harder. Making eye contact is very important to feeling connected to the world, and other humans, as well a human touch. So unplug the technology and encourage “old-fashioned” human interactions more often. Play non-electronic board games, and do things that enable you to be face-to-face with a child.4. Encourage Change — Keeping everything the same is a way to self protect. Letting go of things and demonstrating to children that change is acceptable, nothing to be fearful of, and better than becoming stagnant in life. Change should be embraced as a good thing, as long as it’s an empowering change.5. Encourage Self love

Leadership is, as are other areas within our business culture, evolving. The more we lead with an open mind for change and innovation, the more likely the service we offer will work for the good of all concerned. The challenge of course, is to have an open mind.

This is the power of self-awareness. According to science, and my experience, we are only aware of about 5% of what runs our life. The remainder is subconscious. What has generally worked in the past is no longer having effective outcomes.

Yet, people are clinging to the way things were or how they believe they are “supposed” to be. This comes as no surprise to me as if there is one thing I have learned in my relatively short time here on planet earth is that nothing stays the same. Change is constant, and once we understand and embrace this as leaders, we will become much more effective. If you are not aware of how your brain and mind can work to resist change, you are in for some unpleasant experiences.

From my experience as an entrepreneur for well over two decades, I can say that one of the most sustainable ways to ensure continued success is a willingness to innovate and evolve. This is more easily accomplished with awareness of how our brain and nervous system functions. There comes a time when one would hopefully come to realize that he or she cannot control the universe. You can either adapt and grow or you are likely to be run over and become extinct.

Yet, history repeats itself every day as yet another person bites the dust because that person believes (or company leadership believed) that he or she would be the exception. Cause and effect will eventually rule and win every time. The old models of leadership are essentially top-down hierarchies, of the “command and control” type. Many people are not only tired of this they are rebelling against it. A 2009 Gallup Poll shows that nearly 70% of employees are to varying degrees disengaged from their work.

External motivations of money and fear are not working well either except perhaps for the timid or the outright greedy. What most people are looking for is purpose and fulfillment, for meaning. Also, people are now looking to feel more personal power and autonomy, instead of being treated like victims or children. The way to become a more effective leader is to first course correct the primary and most important relationship in your life – your relationship to your SELF.

When you make the time to understand how your own brain can hijack your personal power and distort your perception, you can begin to learn how to consciously become more self-aware. Your perception absolutely determines your level of effectiveness, confidence and ability to connect with other people. It is a matter of learning to use tools and processes that engage your WHOLE mind – both intellect and intuition – that can lead to your ability to fully begin to engage your personal power.

True personal power comes from inside out and is much less likely to be influenced by the opinions of others or the fears of change. In the old models of power, really fear and force were used to attempt to dominate and control. This is not power, it is bullying and is rooted in insecurity. It is based in a fearful ego. All one has to do is read the newspaper to see that even dictatorships of countries are even being toppled by the masses.

Change is truly in the air. So, in this new era, a collaborative leadership model is needed. The first level being within one’s own mind and heart. As I have learned how to reconnect with my spirit, my core, while at the same time learning how to consciously and intelligently engage my brain to support the process instead of shutting me down, I am becoming more effective in my business relationships and personal relationships as well.

I’m talking about LIFE integration here. You take you with you, wherever you go, so the more clear you are within yourself, the more clarity you will have in applying business skill sets and leadership ability. Self-awareness is a major ingredient to personal power. Understanding how to manage your brain and mind consciously is a major step in this direction. What are your thoughts?
